{"id":3490,"date":"2024-05-13T12:38:22","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T12:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshberry.com\/eu\/?p=3490"},"modified":"2026-01-02T15:12:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T15:12:48","slug":"april-2024-uk-ma-market-update-ma-activity-picks-up-for-the-investment-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshberry.com\/eu\/blog\/april-2024-uk-ma-market-update-ma-activity-picks-up-for-the-investment-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"April 2024 UK M&amp;A Market Update: M&amp;A Activity Picks Up for the Investment Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-insurance-m-amp-a-market-update-nbsp\">Insurance M&amp;A market update\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>April proved to be a relatively quiet month for announced UK insurance distribution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshberry.com\/eu\/solutions\/corporate-finance-advisory\/mergers-acquisitions\/\">mergers and acquisitions<\/a> (M&amp;A), with only nine new transactions, taking the year-to-date (YTD) total for 2024 to 45 (vs. 54 at the same point in 2023).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an ongoing trend of a reduction in the average size of transactions. In 2023 the average headcount of all M&amp;A targets (excluding personal lines) was 27, a drop from more than 50 in both 2021 and 2022. YTD for 2024 the average headcount of deals is 16. Mainstream buyers in the UK are increasingly targeting smaller acquisitions, driven both by the lack of supply of medium sized opportunities, and because they can buy at better prices among (often unadvised) sellers of smaller firms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most notable deal in the month was ICG\u2019s investment into Staysure, the specialist travel insurance provider. This was the second direct private equity investment into the sector in 2024, equaling the total seen during all of 2023. It was also the thirteenth personal lines deal of 2024, versus only 17 during the whole of 2023, suggesting a marked increase in activity in this segment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-transactions-nbsp\">Other transactions:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jensten Group<\/strong> announced two new acquisitions (as well as the agreement of a new \u00a3170m credit facility), for <strong>Henry Seymour &amp; Co.<\/strong>, a broker in Surrey that includes the Salon Gold brand, and <strong>Robert Gerrard &amp; Co.<\/strong> in Chingford.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>JMG Group<\/strong> announced its largest deal of the year so far and the biggest commercial lines deal of the month, adding <strong>BQI Insurance<\/strong> and its sister company <strong>BQI Protection<\/strong>, with \u00a325m of gross written premium.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norfolk-based Top 50 broker <strong>Alan Boswell Group<\/strong> acquired <strong>The Insurance Centre<\/strong>, a taxi and driving school specialist located in Norwich.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AssuredPartners<\/strong> announced a new acquisition in South Wales, adding <strong>LT Insurance<\/strong>, which will become part of Assured-owned <strong>PSP Insurance Brokers<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ardonagh<\/strong> announced a deal for <strong>SIB Insurance<\/strong> in Southport.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seventeen Group<\/strong> announced its third deal of 2024, adding <strong>Jannard Quadrant Insurance Brokers<\/strong> in Watford.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NSM-owned <strong>Kingfisher<\/strong> added <strong>Lynbrook Insurance Services<\/strong>, a classic car specialist.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-investment-m-amp-a-market-update-nbsp\">Investment M&amp;A market update&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>April was a busy month for M&amp;A activity in the investment sector, particularly in wealth management, with the deal making being led by <strong>S\u00f6derberg &amp; Partners<\/strong> buying stakes in four firms: Tunbridge Wells-based <strong>Courtney Havers<\/strong>, Worcester-based <strong>Bespoke-Advice Ltd <\/strong>(\u00a3630m of client assets), Surrey-based <strong>Clear Financial Advice <\/strong>(\u00a3120m of client assets),<strong> <\/strong>and Walton-on-Thames-based <strong>Bigmore Associates<\/strong>. This marks six UK acquisitions announced in 2024 by the Swedish wealth manager and 11 since receiving additional investment from KKR in June 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-notable-wealth-management-transactions-nbsp\">Other notable wealth management transactions:\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dubai-based <strong>Hoxton Capital Management<\/strong>, which recently reached $1.7bn of assets under management (AUM), also had a busy month, acquiring Guildford-based <strong>Bartholomew Financial Planning<\/strong> and Dudley-based <strong>Alpha Financial Services<\/strong> (\u00a380m of AUM).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Titan Wealth<\/strong> expanded its presence in the East of England with the purchase of Norwich-based <strong>Loveday &amp; Partners<\/strong>, adding \u00a3600m of AUM, pushing Titan Wealth\u2019s total AUM to \u00a317.3bn. It was also reported that Titan Wealth was considering a deal for fellow Ares Management-backed wealth manager <strong>Independent Wealth Planners<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foresight Wealth Group <\/strong>announced the acquisition of Burnley-based IFA <strong>Cassons Financial Planning<\/strong>, adding \u00a3120m of client assets to the Cheshire-based financial planner.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loyal North<\/strong>, which manages \u00a31.9bn in client assets nationally, added an additional \u00a360m of client funds with the acquisition of Surrey-based advice firm <strong>Whitman-Fry<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investment management and stockbroking firm <strong>Redmayne Bentley<\/strong> announced that it would buy the private client business of Liverpool-based wealth manager <strong>Blankstone Sington<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Becketts<\/strong> announced the acquisition of fellow Bury St Edmunds-based <strong>Waveney Valley Independent Financial Advisers<\/strong>, adding two additional financial planners as well as two back-office staff.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-transactions-nbsp-0\">Other transactions:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maven Capital<\/strong>, the private equity subsidiary of Mattioli Woods, completed its previously announced purchase of the EIS-focused fund, <strong>Newable Ventures<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C.
