Specialty Intermediary M&A: Buyer Demand Grows While Seller Supply Remains Scarce

Specialty intermediary M&A activity remained resilient through Q3 2026, even as buyers became increasingly selective amid a challenging market environment. See why differentiated specialty firms continue to command premium valuations and what’s driving the widening valuation gap across the sector.

Specialty intermediary merger and acquisition (M&A) activity remained steady through the first nine months of 2026, despite growing headwinds across the broader insurance distribution sector. While transaction volume has remained relatively consistent with 2025, the market continues to be characterized by a significant imbalance between robust buyer demand and the limited supply of attractive acquisition opportunities.

This dynamic is particularly evident in the property and casualty (P&C) specialty market, where 41 distinct buyers announced 52 transactions through September 30, 2026—an average of just 1.3 acquisitions per buyer. Despite an expanding universe of strategic acquirers and private capital investors pursuing specialty businesses, limited seller supply continues to constrain transaction volume and intensify competition for high-quality acquisition opportunities.
