February 4, 2016 officially marked MarshBerry’s 35th Anniversary.  Over this time frame, the company has grown to become a leader in management and Merger & Acquisition (M&A) consulting for independent insurance agents, national brokers, private equity firms, banks and credit unions, specialty distributors and carriers in all fifty states.

At its foundation, MarshBerry is a company based on data and relationships.  Since its founding in 1981, the company has grown to become ranked as the #1 M&A advisor for insurance brokerage according to SNL Financial,

When the company was initially formed the primary focus was on valuations and M&A advisory.  However, Larry Marsh, one of MarshBerry’s founders, saw a need for data and benchmarking in an often-underserved marketplace.  So, in 1984, MarshBerry launched Perspectives for High Performance (PHP), a proprietary financial management system and financial management benchmarking system enabling agencies to accurately and conveniently assess the complete spectrum of their financial performance variables.  Today, MarshBerry’s PHP system utilizes more than 400 key ratios designed to analyze insurance agency performance.  The database represents more than $5 billion in aggregate agency revenue and offers historical statistics from more than 400 independent agencies and brokers across the United States and Canada.

Along with PHP, MarshBerry has been at the forefront of innovation on behalf of the insurance community.  In 1997, they launched the first of its three executive-focused Peer Exchange Networks, Agency Peak Performance Exchange (APPEX), with a focus on improving agency value.  The company has since created Bank Agency Network (BANK), helping agencies improve growth and foster unity between the insurance operation and the bank, and Total Agency Sales Culture (TASC) which enables agencies to drive consistent and intentional organic growth.  Today, our executive Peer Exchange Networks boast more than 130 partner agencies representing more than $1.9 billion in aggregate revenue.

Continuing to offer their clients best in class solutions, in 2014, MarshBerry launched the MarshBerry 360 Seminar Series designed to give agencies, carriers and wholesalers the full view of M&A and Organic Growth Best Practices.  The seminars aim to help insurance agents and brokers understand areas of focus as they work to lead their firm to growth and profitability, and to maximize shareholder value over the long term.

“Over the last 35 years, our organization has continually evolved and has set the pace for the industry,” said Chairman and CEO John Wepler. “I’m extremely proud of our history and how we continue to push the envelope forward.  If we accomplished this much in 35 years – I can’t wait to see what we do next.”

At their core, MarshBerry has one primary objective:  helping clients Learn, Improve and Realize their value.  Over the next 35 years and beyond they will look to continue to lead the way in the insurance industry with a continued focus on data and relationships.

Do You Have a Lazy Balance Sheet?

For the fourth year in a row, private equity (PE) outperformed other private market asset classes, based on global funds raised in 2000-2017. Some executives may see higher levels of debt on the balance sheet as risky or a potential negative. However, a firm could benefit from more leverage, as debt can multiply returns on investment and offer tax advantages.
